UMaine's new 95-room hotel already has hundreds of reservations

A 95-room hotel opening March 5 on the University of Maine's campus already has about 400 reservations through October. Hotel Ursa includes two historic buildings on campus that sat mostly unoccupied for more than a decade and were repurposed, plus the newly built Polaris Hall. Coburn Hall and Holmes Hall were built in the late 1880s and housed the agriculture and history departments and the chemistry department, respectively. The hotel is named for the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor constellations, meaning "greater bear and lesser bear," according to its website. It is also a nod to UMaine's mascot, the black bear.

Boutique Hotel Plans Underway on UMaine Campus

Jake Ward, UMaine vice president of innovation and economic development, said the buildings were built in the late 1800s. A Chicago-based investment firm and a Pennsylvania-based real estate developer have formed a partnership through which they will renovate two historic buildings on the University of Maine campus in Orono into a boutique hotel. Harrison Street, the investment firm, said Thursday that it has formed a joint venture with Radnor Property Group LLC to turn Coburn and Holmes halls into a campus hotel.

UMaine Trustees Advance Boutique Hotel Renovations for Historic Buildings on Orono Campus

University of Maine System trustees voted Monday to move forward with a project that would turn two long-vacant buildings on the University of Maine’s campus in Orono into an on-campus, boutique hotel. During a board meeting, the trustees voted unanimously for a resolution to complete negotiations and enter into a 99-year lease agreement with Radnor Property Group, LLC. In April, the university named Radnor as its choice to redevelop the historic Holmes and Coburn halls.
