Celebrating National Dog Day at Hotel Ursa

7/31/2026

Paws, Pines, and Tail-Wagging Times

There is something inherently special about exploring Maine with a dog by your side. Whether it's watching them bound through fallen leaves along a pine-scented trail or having them next to you as you pause to take in the views of the Stillwater River, four-legged companions make every journey richer. Here in Orono, where curiosity is woven into our natural surroundings, we believe that the best adventures are the ones shared with your whole family, including the furry members.

With National Dog Day right around the corner this August, we are reflecting on what makes our campus base camp such a welcoming haven for travelers and their dogs. From campus strolls to cozy nights in our historic halls, bringing your dog to Hotel Ursa isn't just permitted, it's part of the authentic Maine experience.

A Summer Highlight: Hosting UMaine’s Comfort K9, Bear

Comfort K9 Bear at Hotel Ursa

If you happened to be strolling through our hotel buildings earlier this summer, you might have caught a glimpse of a particularly handsome guest receiving royal treatment. We had the absolute delight of welcoming Bear, the University of Maine’s beloved Comfort K9, for a special visit to Hotel Ursa.

Bear visited our very own 3D-printed bears just outside our lobby doors! Bear proved that our scholarly retreats are 100% pup-approved.

Tailored Hospitality for Your Four-Legged Co-Pilot

We know that traveling with a dog requires a little extra care, which is why we handle the details so you can focus on making memories. When you check into Hotel Ursa with your dog, we make sure they feel like a VIP (Very Important Pup) right from arrival.

Everyday Perks for Campus Pups

Every dog-friendly stay includes a welcome amenity pack designed for campus exploration:

  • A fresh Hotel Ursa tennis ball for fetch sessions across the expansive campus green lawns.

  • Tasty dog treats to reward your trail partner after a long drive.

  • A roll of handy poop bags for effortless cleanup during outdoor strolls.

Transparent Pet Policy Details

To ensure our rooms remain immaculate for all guests, a non-refundable pet fee of $50 per stay applies, along with a daily fee of $15 (charged up to a maximum of 7 days). Whether you are staying for a quick weekend or an extended getaway, our pet policy ensures your dog gets the space and care they deserve.

A Day in the Life of a Dog in Orono and Bangor

Staying directly on the UMaine campus means your morning walk begins the moment you step outside our doors. The morning sun filtering through the towering pines of the adjacent DeMeritt University Forest sets a peaceful tone for the day, offering miles of shaded, paved, and gravel trails right in our backyard.

If you and your dog are up for a short excursion off-campus, the nearby Bangor City Forest features over 680 acres of protected woodland paths, while the fully fenced off-leash park at Essex Woods Dog Park gives energetic pups plenty of room to run and socialize.

After a morning on the trails, the local food and beverage scene in Central Maine makes it easy to bring your dog along for lunch or an evening toast:

  • Relax on the expansive, sunlit patio at Orono Brewing Company, where leashed dogs are always welcomed alongside great food and local craft brews.

  • Head down to the riverbanks to sip seasonal releases on the outdoor deck at Marsh Island Brewing.

  • Take a stroll along the Bangor Waterfront and grab a table on the outdoor patio at Sea Dog Brewing Co. to watch the river roll by.
